Schools Lists

The Japanese education system consists of six years of elementary school (Shogakko), three years of junior high school (Chugakko), three years of senior high school (Kotogakko or Koko), and four years of college or university (Daigaku) or two years of junior college (Tanki Daigaku or Tandai). While Non-Japanese children are not required to enroll in Japanese schools, they are eligible to enroll in public schools.
The Japanese school year begins in April and is divided into three semesters: April through July, September through December, and January through March. There are vacations between the semesters: summer, winter, and spring.

■ Children and Students Eligible to Enroll in Elementary and Junior High Schools

　

In October, Matsudo City Hall notifies parents or guardians of the schedule for health checkups for their children who are expected to start elementary school in April of the following year.  After the health checkup, in mid-December, the parents or guardians receive a notification for enrollment.  For enrollment in junior high schools in April, Matsudo City Hall mails, in mid-December, the notification for enrollment to pupils graduating from elementary school.

When your children are transferring to schools for the first time in Japan, you will need their Alien Registration Cards. When your children are transferring from schools in other cities, you will need their Alien Registration Cards, certificates of enrollment ( Zaigaku Shomeisho, issued by the schools they are currently enrolled in), and textbook certificate.

■ Education Expenses

　

School lunches are available at public elementary and junior high schools.  While there is no enrollment fee, tuition, or textbook fee during the 9-year compulsory education period, other expenses must be paid by students' parents (or guardians), including educational materials other than textbooks, school supplies, school lunches, field trips and excursions.  Financial assistance programs are available for low-income families to pay for school supplies and lunch fees.
