Japanese taxes consist of national taxes (income tax, consumption tax, etc) and municipal taxes (residents tax, light car tax, cigarette tax, etc.). Residents tax (citizen tax) is collected from local residents to pay for administrative expenses for public services provided to residents (including corporate entities).

Citizen Tax (Shimin Zei)

This tax is calculated for residents who have lived in Matsudo City as of January 1 and had income during the previous year. It is the sum of the amount levied on the previous year's income and a fixed per capita amount and the per capita levy tax which is levied regardless of income.
Even if you don't live in Matsudo but if have a business establishment, office and/or real estate properties, the fixed per capita amount will be assessed.

[Filling Taxes]
Please file your tax at the Citizen Tax Section (Shimin Zei Ka) of city hall between February 16 and March 15 every year. Your Citizen Tax is determined based on this filing. However, filing is not needed for those who had only wage earnings during the previous year and income was reported by their employers.

{Tax Payment Procedures]
Those other than wage earners are required to pay the Citizen Tax individually according to the tax notice mailed from city hall. The payment schedule is divided into four yearly installments (June, August, October, and December). Payments can be made at city hall, its branch offices, banks, Japan Post Bank (Yucho Ginko), post offices, and convenience stores.

[Automatic Bank Transfer]
Citizen Tax can be paid automatically from your bank account, like payment for utilities. If you make use of this service, your tax will be paid without having to take an extra trip to the bank or city hall. Just bring the tax payment notice, your bank notebook, and name stamp used for the bank notebook to your bank to arrange for this service.

[Tax-Related Certificates]
Your taxation and tax payment certificates for a given year are issued by the city hall in the area where you lived as of January 1 of that year.

[Before Leaving Japan]
If you leave Japan after January 2 of that year, please find someone who will pay the Citizen Tax on behalf of you. If you leave Japan after June of that year, please find someone who will pay the Citizen Tax on behalf of you or pay an equivalent amount of your Citizen Tax (or all four installments) before leaving Japan.
